Sanctuary Makers

Driven by a vision to reinvent the decorating industry and create an amazing experience for customers, a new retail brand was born.

Sanctuary Makers began in 1987 as a boutique, decorative ceramic tile maker and has grown to boast the largest range of ceramic tiles in the world. From their incredible manufacturing facility in Melbourne, Sanctuary Makers produce tiles in any design you desire, in any colour, in an impressive amount of sizes … and turned around in days, not months.

The Brief

Their vision was to grow the business from Australia’s only decorative tile manufacturer into a retail business that sells its products through signature stores in capital cities throughout Australia. The owners wanted to take control from design, manufacture, distribution, right through to the consumer; Sanctuary Makers – the people that sell the product, make the product.

Di Marca was invited to create an exciting retail brand that would talk to their amazing manufacturing capabilities and appeal to design-savvy home renovators, architects, developers and interior designers.

The Outcome

The project included brand strategy, appearance and guidelines that would facilitate the expansion of the Sanctuary Makers’ retail experience into new locations around the country.

Why Sanctuary Makers, what was the inspiration? Sanctuary Makers creates beautifully decorated spaces that delight. When you’re peacefully nestled in your sanctuary, you’re safe, you feel free. Free of the world outside, free of any friction or worries. This idea of freedom conjured up the idea of a butterfly, which lead us to the idea of transformation. A butterfly is free and has transformed into something beautiful.

The stylised butterfly logo is supported by a simple, restrained design aesthetic that invites people to define their own sense of style while exploring Sanctuary Makers’ amazing range and instore experience.

Our clients were so thrilled with the new brand that the Guidelines took pride of place on their coffee table at home.

With the toolkit of assets and extensive guidelines we developed, the Sanctuary Makers team and Di Marca are rolling out the new brand appearance across all touchpoints. After successfully relaunching their Melbourne Showroom, they opened their first interstate showroom in 2020, delighting customers in the much sought-after Sydney suburb of Woollahra.
